Poster Analyses


Poster analysed: Friday the 13th

The main colours are black, red and white – 3 common colours linked with death, blood and danger.

The main character is shown in the middle of the poster, making it the first thing that the audience sees.



The location in the poster is a forest at night time. This may tell the reader that forests can be dangerous and you need to be on alert.

The poster tells us the film is produced by the same company that produced Texas Chainsaw Massacre (a popular horror movie that was released in 2003). This should persuade fans of that movie to go see this one.

The font is done in red against a black background to stand out and get the audiences’ attention.

Poster analysed: Insidious

The setting is a house, suggesting it’s the main destination that the movie’s set.

The main image is the boy with abnormal eyes  - telling the audience he’s the main threat in the movie.

The text, “It’s not the house that’s haunted” supports this idea that the boy is the cause of what goes on inside the house.

The poster tells us the film’s made by the makers of SAW and Paranormal Activity (two well-known award winning horror movies), saying it’s a must see for fans of those movies.

It’s got a review above the title, which is also persuading the audience to go watch it.

Poster analysed: The Awakening

The main character is the centre of attention on the poster, and she’s looking directly at the audience – maybe to tell them it’s dangerous.

The setting is a massive house, surrounded by bare trees – a common horror movie setting.

There are two reviews either side of the main character, convincing the audience they should go see it.

The faded face of a boy in the sky links with the text “All the children are gone, except one” – this tells the reader the house is accommodating a boy who’s dangerous, and is the person responsible for making this movie a horror.

The poster’s been made to have a pale white/blue tint to it, commonly associated with being cold.
