Trailer Analyses

Trailer analysed: Cloverfield (2008)

The genre is sci-fi horror.

We get told the producer’s/director’s/writer’s name and the time of release near the end of the film, so it stays in our minds.

Calm and slow paced at the beginning, then moves on to become speedier towards the end.

It’s put in chronological order.

Doesn’t give too much away – it only lets the audience know there’s a creature invading Earth, nothing more.

At the very beginning, we see 2 distributors; Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions.

The edits get faster as more action is shown.

Who’s starring in the film isn’t shown – this may be to make audiences curious and want to go see who’s in it.

Trailer analysed: Dead Silence (2007)

The genre is thriller horror.

The time it’s released is said multiple times during the trailer.

The 2 distributors Universal Studios and Twisted Pictures are shown at the very beginning.

It doesn’t tell you who’s starring in the film – this, again, could make the audience want to see it more.

It tells us it’s made by the same director and writer that produced the films ‘Saw’ – maybe this is told to make people aware it’s by the same person who’s created a popular and well-known horror film, so they have high expectations.

Trailer analysed: Husk (2011)

The genre is supernatural dramatic horror.

The date it’s released into cinemas is said twice during the trailer – one near the end so it stays in the audience’s mind.

One distributor (After Dark Films) is said at the very beginning of the trailer.

This trailer doesn’t tell the audience who stars in it either – clearly a lot of trailers have this aspect so the audience gets curious and wants to know if there are any big names in the film.

It doesn’t tell the audience who it’s directed by.
